Mass Effect has six main classes spread across three skill types. Each class specializes in Combat, Tech, or Biotic. Some classes combine two of these skill types. Which class you should choose depends on the style of play you prefer.

A party is made up of Shepard and two other characters. It's important to select characters that complement Shepard's class. This also means that you can choose the class you want to play, but still have someone in the party perform needed functions from a different class.

  • Combat allows characters to wear better armor, use more weapons and have increased health. Combat skills work well against both bosses and groups.
  • Tech lets characters work with any of the technology they encounter. In addition to hacking security systems and repairing equipment, tech is also used for healing. In combat, techs disable their enemies' equipment and heal their team. Tech skills work especially well against groups of enemies. They usually let other team members do the shooting.
  • Biotic implants that allow the user to manipulate mass effect fields in surprising and unusual ways. Biotic specialists can launch enemies into the air or hold them immobile. Biotic skills are very effective against single targets, making them great for use against bosses. They can also use shields to protect themselves from taking damage.

Soldier

Soldiers are a combat class.

Description: Soldiers are outfitted with an ocular synaptic processor allowing them to fire with heightened focus at their targets. Whether they are picking off Geth at long range, or disposing of a pack of Vorcha up close with a shotgun, Soldiers can overcome any obstacle with sheer firepower. They are the only class capable of wielding assault rifles, and are masters of all other forms of weaponry and ammunition types. When Soldiers utilize their Adrenaline Rush ability, they seemingly slow down time around them giving them precious moments to eliminate foes with lethal accuracy. Additionally when battles get heated, Soldiers can deploy an explosive concussive shot to knock down multiple enemies.

Tactics & Tips

  • This class is ideal for players who enjoy the shooting aspect of the game.
  • Soldiers are the only class that cannot use submachine guns. They don't need to because assault rifles are better anyway.

Adept

Adepts specialize in the use of biotic powers.

Description: The Adept, outfitted with L5x implants, is a biotic specialist, capable of disabling and killing enemies with raw biotic power. With their unique talents, Adepts are the only class able to deploy the Singularity power, a lethal biotic trap capable of snaring multiple enemies. When enemies hide behind cover Adepts are able to Pull them, exposing them for a deadly follow-up attack. Additionally Adepts are able to throw the opposition with their Push ability, making cliffs and ledges lethal opportunities. While they lack advanced combat training, Adepts are the best class at defeating enemies without firing a shot.

Tactics & Tips

  • Adepts are biotic specialists. If you enjoy using biotic powers, or if you enjoy using magic powers in other games, Adept is a good class for you.
  • Adepts have very powerful attacks, but have to wait for their cooldown to finish between attacks. When facing a group of enemies an Adept should stun or kill the strongest enemy first, so that enemy can't attack during the cooldown.

Engineer

Engineers are the tech emphasis class.

Description: The Engineer is one of 6 classes available in Mass Effect 2. They are tech specialists, the only class able to employ combat drones on the battlefield. Summon combat drones to harass enemies, knocking them out of cover and drawing fire away from you. Additionally Engineers can hack mechanized opponents turning deadly enemies into powerful allies. With the ability to use tech powers to manipulate combat, they turn difficult battles into victories. Upgrade your drones, giving them a powerful energy blast or turn them into a deadly bomb. Additionally Engineers have potent offensive capabilities including Incinerate and Overload.

Tactics & Tips

  • Engineers are very powerful against robots and geth. Their AI hacking and overload abilities can make quick work of them. They are weaker against organic enemies, so if you are an engineer be sure you balance out your group by bringing squadmates who are soldiers or biotics.
  • They're also effective at taking down shields and later, once incinerate is unlocked, the armour of opponents. This is great against heavy mechs, airships, armoured organic enemies, like operatives and commandos. Once that is whittled down you can use cryo freeze to allow for a quick take out.
  • The combat drone is a good tool for a bit of crowd patrol, it focuses most of the enemy fire and slows them down with the electric charges.

Infiltrator

Infiltrators combine combat and tech skills.

Description: Infiltrators are tech and combat specialists and the only class able to cloak themselves from detection. They are deadly at any range, with a wide variety of weapons, equipment, and powers that can take down even the most fortified of defenses. With their training in Sniper Rifles, Infiltrators can eliminate foes from safety before moving in. Additionally, with a combination of ammo types at their disposal Infiltrators can handle both organic and synthetic enemies with ease. When combat gets heated, Infiltrators are able to deploy a Tactical Cloak and evade enemies before rejoining the battle and disposing of any remaining opposition.

Tactics & Tips

  • Infiltrators are a sniper class. They get bonuses to sniper rifles, and their cloak ability lets them relocate after enemies have started targeting them.

Sentinel

Sentinels combine tech and biotic skills.

Description: Sentinels are unique, bringing both tech and biotic abilities to the battlefield. They are versatile and always equipped to deal with any situation. After overloading an enemy shield, Sentinels have no trouble throwing the opponent with their biotic powers. Additionally when battles become too heated, they can Cryo Freeze an enemy buying the Sentinel precious time eliminate foes or take cover. Sentinels are also equipped with the most advanced Tech Armor to keeping them safe in hostile situations. If overloaded, the system discharge and stun all enemies within a short distance.

Tactics & Tips

  • Sentinels have enough tech powers to deal with robots, but they also have biotic powers that work against everything.
  • Because Sentinels rely on powers rather than guns, they can be vulnerable during their cooldown period after attacking. Bring along a soldier squadmate to keep enemies busy during your cooldown.

Vanguard

Vanguards combine combat and biotic skills.

Description: Vanguards are outfitted with a L5n implant giving them powerful biotic capabilities; coupled with their weapons training, they become lethal at close range. Vanguards are capable at closing the distance instantly on an enemy with their unique Charge ability. Gathering immense biotic power, Vanguards will Charge toward an enemy, passing over chasms and through obstacles where upon they collide with their target, sending them flying through the air. Additionally Vanguards are able to release an explosive Shockwave, tossing enemies and knocking them from cover. If Vanguards find themselves in trouble, they are also able to use their Charge ability for a quick escape to safety.

Tactics & Tips

  • If you like having biotic powers and enjoy fighting at close range, Vanguard is the class for you.
  • Vanguards have few ranged attacks. Balance your party out by having someone that can carry a sniper rifle, and order them to use it when necessary.
  • Vanguards make excellent flankers. Have the rest of your group pin down the enemy, and the Vanguard can move around to the side and take out the enemy while they are behind cover.
